After a large number of drivers spent Saturday afternoon testing the new venue, Tullyroan Oval got a massive thumbs up from the competitors. Quotes of ‘Superbly fast’, ‘State of the Art’, ‘Smooth as a billiard table’ and ‘Like a miniature Hednesford’ could be heard all round the pit area.
Cars from a variety of formulae tried out the new tarmac, including National Hot Rods, 2.0 Hot Rods, Lightning Rods, Stock Rods, ProStocks, Junior Productions, BriSCA F2 and Saloon Stock Cars. Pleasingly, there were also a number of new and refurbished cars on show too. May thanks to Jonny Teggart and Emma Hammond for the photos. |

Portadown businessman and sometime racer Thomas Dilly was the winner of the charity auction to claim the first competitive drive on the brand new Tullyroan Oval track. Thomas paid £2000 for the privilege, and as everyone looked on proudly, including the venue’s builders Davy McCall and Carmy Gilpin, five cars from the Dilly Roofing Supplies team took the first ever green flag and set off on the first exploratory laps. These were Ethan Dilly’s Junior Production, Ian McReynolds’ National Hot Rod, Feargal McNally’s 2.0 Hot Rod and Lightning Rods from Jordan Rochford and British Champion Brendan McConnell.
Thomas and Davy will now sit down to choose a charity to benefit from the fantastic amount raised, with the handover to take place at Tullyroan Oval in the near future.
*On behalf of all of us here at Tullyroan Oval, and the wider Ulster oval racing community, we would like to extend our thoughts and best wishes to Patsy McConnell and his family at this time and wish him a speedy recovery from his recent bout of ill health. Many will remember Patsy from his racing days at Shamrock Park, and of course he is the father of Lightning Rod British Champion Brendan.

The first regrading of the ProStocks is now available, and it sees NI Points Champion Ryan Abernethy hold a commanding lead over Irish Open Champion Alan Haugh. Both these drivers are still using the older spec cars which become outlawed at the end of June, and it will be interesting to see if they can continue their good form when they change across to the bigger cars. British Champion Dave Morrison currently lies third, ahead of impressive newcomer Andrew Emerson. Indeed, Emerson leads the way after the first round of the P+C Aerials Supreme Series, ahead of Billy Finnegan Jnr and Morrison.

The championship season will soon be in full swing, and invitations have just been received from two promotions regarding forthcoming trips away. Firstly, The ORCi Championship for Lightning Rods takes place at Tipperary MotorSpeedway on Sunday June 10, and will be defended by our own Stephen Emerson. With John McHugh, who originally built the venue back in 1981, back in charge of the racing it should be a great days racing with the Stock Rods ORCi Championship also on the card.
The following weekend sees the ProStocks European Championship take place at Lochgelly in Scotland. Saturday 16th has the first ever staging of the European title, before the Open Scottish Championship, currently held by our own Billy Finnegan, takes place on Sunday 17th.
Any drivers wishing to book in for either event should contact Darren Black.
